"FORT MILLS' NAMEPLATE"
|
Q: February 1945 - so where is it now?
|
A: To the best
of my knowledge, that sign, somewhat battle-scarred, is still at the U.S. Army
Air Defense Artillery Museum at Fort Bliss, Texas.
I saw it there
in 1979, when I was temporarily working for the curator, Mr. Sam Hoyle, while
awaiting reassignment for a teaching tour at West Point.
It is possible
that there has since been a decision to transfer the artifact to the Casemate
Museum at Fort Monroe; can't say. But in 1979, it was certainly at Fort
Bliss. In fact, Sam and I retrieved it from a pile of material the previous
museum curator had intended simply to throw away.
Hope this
helps.
