2004 Heritage Bn - All Rights Reserved O, Save your people, and bless your heritage; be their shepherd, and carry them forever. Psalms 28:9 Commissioned for the Heritage Bn., this design study is of St. Michael, Patron Saint of the Paratroopers. The crest has no official status except as a logo of this website. St. Michael is known to Christians as Michael, the archangel who led angels loyal to God in the heavenly war of Lucifer's insurrection. Though Lucifer has been cast out of Heaven, he and his band of rebel angels apparently still have access (cf. Job 1:6; 2:1) and a state of war exists even now (cf. Rev. 12:4; cf. Dan. 10:13; Jude 9). Some unspecified event is going to trigger a mighty angelic battle (Rev. 12:7) and Michael, whose name signifies "Who is like God?," will lead the Lord's host to victory. The Bible refers to Michael as "archangel" and "one of the chief princes," but the early Greek fathers and others consider him the most senior of all the angels, or "Prince of the Seraphim." The choice of St. Michael as the patron saint of Paratroopers is based on the scene depicted in Daniel (X, 12:2) where Michael vanquishes Satan and his allies in a battle fought, in a large part in heaven, or, "Airborne." St. Michael's color is blue. In World War II, Joe Natale, a chaplain for the airborne units instituted a St. Michael's Airborne Society, specifically for Catholics. An unknown GI drew St. Michael wearing jump boots vanquishing the devil. This fraternal organization quickly lost any particular religious affiliation, opening up membership to all airborne troops. A soldier must show proof of their airborne qualification to join. Depending on the Command or unit, members are often given a certificate and a St. Michael's medallion. Members must read off the following jump commands upon joining: 1. GET READY! I will always attempt to be spiritually fit before my Maker. 2. STAND UP! I will make a decision to maintain high moral standards in spite of what others say or do. 3. HOOK UP! Through personal prayer, I will maintain a direct line of communication with my God. 4. CHECK STATIC LINE! I will make a daily check of my attitudes and relationships with others. 5. CHECK EQUIPMENT! I will take a personal inventory of my weaknesses and faults and try to amend them. 6. SOUND OFF FOR EQUIPMENT CHECK! I will share my faith with others by word and example. 7. STAND IN THE DOOR! With my belief in a supreme being I will determine to face bravely whatever test life give to me. 8. GO! Whether on land or in the air I will be firm in my resolutions to serve God and country as both would expect me to. |
